It's a waterfront villa in one of the most coveted neighborhoods of Miami Beach, Florida. Pictured here, at the end of the boardwalk, hovering above a bed of crushed seashells, is the front entrance, detailed with a custom, oversized, circular cast-brass handle. The massive limestone sculpture beside, by French artist Aude Herledan
A treasure trove of works by marquee names – think Damien Hirst, Pablo Picasso, Charlotte Perriand, and many more – coupled with interiors inspired by the most exuberant of design movements, makes this art-loving couple's Florida home a cut above the rest.
The scope of the project: A total renovation involving a complete overhaul of every detail of the property, "from the street to the water", while preserving the original structural envelope.
Citizen Artist:
“We were entrusted to conceptualise, detail, and oversee execution of every aspect of the design, allowing the firm to leave its full imprint on all elements of the interior architecture, millwork, furnishings, material selection as well as exterior landscape and hardscape design.”
The entry volume, as well as the hallway that bisects it, are crowned with vaulted ceilings that play into the symphony of archways and other curvaceous design details that lend a seductive rhythm to the interior.
A toothsome Miami home chockablock with dazzling design details—reaffirms the core values and profound artistry that have long defined Kalichstein and Rose’s (Citizen Artist) work.
The living room is outfitted with a custom sofa, a cocktail table of Murano glass and white oak, a Charles Tassin chair, a Murano palm-form floor lamp by Aureliano Toso, a Citizen Artist rug for Mehraban, and side tables by Christophe Delcourt and Caste Design… Sliding leather-wrapped doors with insets of marble, quartzite, and brass open to reveal a television.
Frank Lloyd Wright chairs designed for the Riverview Terrace restaurant near Taliesin in Wisconsin pull up to a custom desk in the home office. The desk chair is by Giorgetti.
In the primary suite, the fabric headboard and the plaster wall behind it are adorned with a 24k gold-leaf mural of palm fronds executed by the decorative arts wizards at Londubh Studio in LA. The palm leaves are mirrored in three dimensions in the form of a foliate chandelier of brass fronds, underscoring the designers’ penchant for the serial repetition of shapes, lines, and motifs.
The exterior lounge outside the primary suite features reclaimed hemlock beams and a hand-painted ceiling detail by the decorative arts team.
The beach-y materials palette is introduced immediately at the entry to the home, which features a ground cover of crushed seashells and walls covered in a custom-tinted stucco treatment that incorporates an aggregate of crushed shells. The landscape firm Lancescape Miami translated Joshua Rose and Rafael Kalichstein’s vision of a lush and tropical oasis.
Joshua Rose and Rafael Kalichstein:
To our extraordinary clients, who placed their trust in us, we offer our deepest gratitude.
To our senior designer, the indescribably brilliant Ophélie Renaudin, we express our unending awe; without your creativity, talent, positivity, and patience, we would be lost. To @scott_joyce_design: thank you for everything, particularly the wisdom and grace.
To the the myriad artists, artisans, tradespeople, makers, tinkerers, vendors, problem-solvers, supporters—of whom there are too many to list here and some of whom are no longer with us—we bow to you. This project could not have been were it not for the efforts of a tribe of dedicated people, all of whom said “yes.” We marvel at the community formed around this endeavor. We are humbled by your belief in our vision.
Beautiful garden! 👏👏
